The Tony Williams Memorial Scholarship for Indigenous Students in Mathematics-Related Programs

Description

In memory of Tony Williams, the Actuarial Foundation of Canada has donated $5,000 to create scholarships for Indigenous Canadian students pursuing university studies in mathematics-related programs.

Tony was a prominent actuary who devoted years of his life to promoting the success of Indigenous people and students. Among his seminal contributions were his many years as president and chair of the Verna J. Kirkness Education Foundation, whose purpose is to increase the number of Indigenous students graduating from pure and applied science, engineering and mathematics university programs in Canada.

Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to students, one in September 2024, and one in September 2025. Awardees must meet the following criteria:

  1. Full time Indigenous Canadian students who are in, or will commence, a university program in mathematics, statistics, computing science or actuarial science at a Canadian university. Students who meet the criteria in any year of their program, or entering students, are eligible.
  2. Applicants must have the equivalent of a B average or more.
  3. The first student to hold the scholarship may reapply, entering the competition for the second scholarship.
  • Selection Criteria & Application Process

Students are invited to apply with the attached application form, which includes the requirement to write a two--page essay describing your academic and career aspirations. In particular, your essay should describe how your education in a mathematics-related field relates to your plans. The recipients of the award will be chosen by a selection committee comprising equal representation from the Actuarial Foundation of Canada and The Verna J. Kirkness Education Foundation.
